Is a Career in Sport Right For Me?

Is a career in sport right for me? The answer really depends on how you define working in the sports industry.

For some, a career in the sports industry means competing at the highest level as a professional athlete. But there are a lot of essential jobs that go into making clubs and athletes successful, such as personal training, sports management, or coaching.

The fact is, the sports industry is incredibly diverse, and there is as much going on behind the scenes as there is on the surface.

To help you figure out if a career in the sports industry is the way to go, we at the Academy of Sport are here to dig a little deeper into what you can expect, and what sports courses may be available to you!

You get to work in an industry you’re passionate about

Your passion for sport means you have a great opportunity to get involved in a job you’ll be excited to get up for in the morning. In fact, there are many ways to deepen your passion for the industry by taking on a behind-the-scenes role.

Working to support the sport you love will challenge you emotionally, mentally and physically as you experience the ups and downs of the game first-hand. Depending on what avenue you go down, chances are you’ll also be working with like-minded people who are just as fanatical about sports as you are.

There are many career options

Sport is a massive industry, and it takes a lot of work from everyone, on and off the pitch, to make sure a team works at peak performance. Every role requires dedication and passion, which can result in numerous pathways that you can find success in.

On one hand, you might pursue a career in health-related fields such as physical therapy, athletic training, personal training, sports psychology, sports medicine, or sports nutrition.

On the other hand, your interests might align more with becoming an event manager, administrator, sports journalist, sports photographer, sports agent, or coach.

The sports industry is diverse and filled with interesting career options and sports courses to engage in. With the right qualifications and experience, there’s no limit on what you can achieve or where you can end up.

You’ll have a chance to build a niche

Because the sports industry is so varied, you’ll find many opportunities to specialise in particular fields and develop your own niche. Becoming a leader or expert in a certain field is fantastic way to narrow your focus, find employment and get more enjoyment out of your career.

Let’s say you want to be a personal trainer. You might start off working with all kinds of clients, but as you build your career and gain more experience, you might find you love working with the elderly, with sports teams, or with weight-loss clients.

If you become a sports agent, you could develop a career representing athletes from a particular sport – such as football, basketball or athletics. Whichever path you go down, specialising in an area and building a niche has its advantages. You’ll be able to relate better to your clients, keep on top of trends and work with people with similar goals to you.

You’ll need to get educated

Like most industries, gaining the right qualifications will give you the skills and knowledge to find employment and edge out the competition. This means you’ll need to put your head down and research what sports courses are out there, and which institutions you want to study at.

At the BCA National Academy of Sport, we take pride in delivering excellent sports courses that will help you kickstart a career in the sports and fitness sector. For example, our Certificate III in Fitness SIS30315 will give you the skills and experience to work as a fitness instructor, group exercise instructor or gymnasium instructor.

From here, you could enrol in our Certificate IV in Fitness SIS40215, which will set you up to become a personal trainer – training people one-on-one or in groups. More interested in the business side of the sports industry? Then it’s worth considering our sports development course, which will help you transition into management, coaching and development roles.
